Montreal’s Underground City Hike

Underground City? Did you read correctly? That’s right, no need for your jacket, scarves, or mitts for this entirely indoor tour!

Montreal is home to the world’s longest underground tunnel network, spanning an impressive 33 kilometres (20.5 miles), and we’ve chosen a 5km (3 mile) zig zagging route of the most interesting parts for you to explore.

Our expert guide will lead you on an urban hike through Montreal’s “RESO” system of interior spaces and underground tunnels that link the metro stations, public spaces, office buildings, shopping centres, boutique hotels, and art centres of Downtown and Old Montreal.

Weekdays we’ll witness the buzz of 9 to 5ers going about their working day, and on weekends we’ll practically have the space to ourselves.

We’ll hike through the tunnels, emerge to beautiful atrium views, admire (or critique) public art, pass an ice-skating rink the middle of a food court, lunch beside a stunning water fountain, ride the Metro, visit a modern boutique hotel, and even discover how a mall was constructed underneath a Church placed upon stilts. Along the way you’ll learn why this network is so vital to Montreal’s economy. You’ll also find out the inside scoop on where to shop, dine, and pause for a drink or high tea.

On those cold wintry days, you’ll be happy to be warm inside discovering a whole new world – or underworld – of Montreal, and be thankful not to get lost down there on your own.
